Officially declared a county on 11 September 1806, White County, Tennessee was created from surrounding Smith and Jackson Counties. This database, taken from microfilm copies of original federal documents, is a collection of census records from the county in 1920. Entries in the collection include the resident's name, age, sex, race, marital status, and place of birth. Also provided for each individual is the district and house number in which they lived. It contains the names of nearly 15,700 individuals. Extended Description

The county was named for John White (1751-1846), a Revolutionary War soldier, fifer, surveyor, and frontiersman. The county seat is Sparta.
