Given territorial status in 1836 and granted statehood in 1848, Wisconsin grew in population from 300,000 to 775,000 in just the first ten years as a state. This database is a reprint of a handbook for the state originally published in 1856. It also includes information regarding the 1855 state census and a comparison with it and the 1850 federal census.
