Narrative of a fishing expedition in Michigan in the 1870s

Description

As the metropolitan areas of the Midwest grew, an increasing number of urban professionals sought leisure activities in the "out of doors." This database is the narrative of one such group of Chicago lawyers on a fishing trip in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It was originally published in the Chicago Sunday Times and the Chicago Sunday Tribune in the late 1870s. Providing descriptions of fly-fishing techniques, adventures shooting river rapids, and bobbing for pike, it includes an informal guide to birds and animals of the area. Also provided is a romanticized picture of the group's Native American travel guide. For researchers of early Midwest leisure activities, this can be an informative and intriguing narrative.
