Description of the life of a young girl who moved to Michigan in the late nineteenth century

Description

Georgia Hufford emigrated with her family from Canada to Grand Rapids, Michigan at the close of the Civil War. This database is a nostalgic reminiscence of her childhood on a homestead near Petoskey, in northern Michigan. Arranged chronologically, it describes the daily life on a relatively self-sufficient farm on the Little Traverse Bay. Household tasks such as sugaring, baking and cleaning are described along with accounts of rare or vanished wildlife. For those persons attempting to understand the life of a typical Michigan settler in the nineteenth century, this can be an illuminating narrative.
