Description

Jacob Harlan grew up in Indiana and moved to Michigan where, in 1845, he and an uncle organized a wagon train to California. This database is a collection of memories by Harlan regarding his preparations and travels to the West Coast in 1846. It contains his encounters with the doomed Donner party, and Fremont's battalion during his overland journey. He also describes his life in San Francisco associated with a milk and livery business, storekeeping in the gold camps near Coloma and farming near San Jose.
